Josh Freese, the drummer for the Foo Fighters, announced on Friday that he was let go from the band after roughly two years of working together. In an Instagram post, Freese, 52, said the band called him on Monday night to inform him of their decision “to go in a different direction with their drummer.” No reason was given for the change. Freese, a veteran drummer who has worked with Nine Inch Nails, Devo, and Guns N’ Roses, expressed his surprise at the news.

“In my 40 years drumming professionally, I’ve never been let go from a band, so while I’m not angry — just a bit shocked and disappointed,” he wrote. Despite the unexpected development, Freese maintained a positive attitude. He said he enjoyed the past two years with Foo Fighters and respected the band’s decision, although a new drummer has yet to be announced.

Foo Fighters part ways with drummer

Freese joined the Foo Fighters in 2023, replacing the late Taylor Hawkins, who passed away in March 2022. He participated in the band’s tour supporting their 2023 album “But Here We Are,” their first release following Hawkins’ death.

Earlier this week, Foo Fighters posted on Instagram that the band would perform at the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix, marking their first show since frontman Dave Grohl had a child outside of his marriage last year. The band’s representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding Freese’s departure. In his post, Freese acknowledged his freelance work and ability to adapt to changes.

“But as most of you know,” he wrote, “I’ve always worked freelance and bounced between bands, so I’m fine.”
