Days Anthrax

Frank Bello, the bassist of thrash metal band Anthrax, recently shared his experiences from his early days as a musician. Bello grew up in the Bronx, New York, where he was inspired by musicians he considered his heroes and superheroes. Charlie Benante, Anthrax’s drummer and Bello’s uncle, played a significant role in his musical journey.

They would jam together, with Bello playing guitar and Benante recognizing Bello’s natural inclination towards bass parts. Benante suggested Bello switch to bass, which immediately clicked for him. Bello named Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath, Steve Harris of Iron Maiden, and Gene Simmons of KISS as his top bass-playing influences.

These musicians inspire him daily and have shaped his playing style.

Early days of playing bass

Reflecting on his first show with Anthrax at L’Amours in Brooklyn, Bello recalled a mixture of fear and excitement.

His mother had to give him money to buy a bass because he couldn’t afford one at the time. Despite being friends with the band before joining them, Bello was extremely nervous during the audition. Charlie Benante, who was rooting for Bello, emphasized the importance of learning the parts.

After playing the first song, “Metal Thrashing Mad,” Bello felt more confident in his abilities, and the initial nervousness subsided. Anthrax recently returned to the stage on October 12, 2024, at a festival in Sacramento, California, following a year and a half hiatus due to weather and personal reasons. In 2021, Bello released his memoir, “Fathers, Brothers, And Sons: Surviving Anguish, Abandonment, And Anthrax,” with a foreword written by Gene Simmons.
