Aamir Khan has been open about his personal life during the promotion of his upcoming film “Sitaare Zameen Par.” In recent interviews, he discussed his marriages and divorces from ex-wives Reena Datta and Kiran Rao. Aamir married Reena in 1986 and they have two children together, Ira and Junaid. The couple divorced in 2002.

In 2005, he married Kiran and they welcomed their son Azad in 2011. Aamir and Kiran announced their separation in 2021. Speaking to Zoom, Aamir shared his thoughts on the seriousness of marriage in India.

“Marriage is a very serious thing. When your marriage breaks, you go to divorce, and people don’t like that. Emotionally, they don’t like it either,” he said.

Aamir admitted that their families were unhappy about both divorces.

He explained that certain circumstances made them realize their relationships had changed.

He added that he and Kiran could have pretended to be happy together while living separate personal lives, but that would have been dishonest. “I can pretend that Kiran and I are happy together and we can live like that our whole lives and personally, I can do whatever I want, she can do whatever she wants, but in the eyes of the world, we are still married. We can live like that too, but that would be a lie,” Aamir said.

Despite the divorces, Aamir and Kiran remain happy as co-parents and collaborate on projects like the Paani Foundation. Aamir stated, “Shaadi me main kamyab nahi hua hun, lekin divorce me main hua hoon (I wasn’t successful in marriage, but I’ve been successful in divorce).”

Aamir said he still believes in the institution of marriage. “It’s a very old institution and I have the deepest regard in my heart for this institution. It’s a very beautiful feeling.

I would want that every person gets to experience this,” he added.
