Amateur radio operators from the Kanawha Amateur Radio Club gathered at Coonskin Park this weekend for the American Radio League Field Day. The annual 24-hour event challenges radio enthusiasts to make contact with as many people as possible across the nation using various methods like Morse code. 17-year-old Kian Lewis participated to develop his communication skills.

“It’s really cool,” Lewis said. “You get a lot of knowledge, and it’s really helpful too.”

The club set up satellites and tested their equipment in the June heat. “Basically, we are just having fun right now,” said Terry Sanner, President of the Kanawha Amateur Radio Club.

Field Day allows members to practice their abilities in remote locations, preparing for emergencies. Sanner explained that when a hurricane hit Florida, police officers lost their communications, but ham radios enabled them to use handheld radios to communicate with headquarters about what they saw and needed.

Sanner emphasized that the event helps expose younger generations to radio equipment and communications, readying them for future disasters. Lewis said he feels safer now knowing he can use the radio if stranded. “I really do feel safe,” Lewis said.

“I think it’s a great thing they are doing.”
