Architects bringing nature home with trees

Biophilic design is a growing trend in architecture and interior design. It aims to bring people closer to nature in their homes and workplaces. One way to do this is by using real trees indoors.

In New York City, the Ford Foundation building has a 12-story atrium filled with trees and plants. The Brookfield Place shopping center also has tall palm trees in its main space. Singapore’s Jewel Changi airport has an indoor forest with 2,500 trees from different countries.

Travelers can walk on paths and see a large waterfall. Some buildings, called “greenscrapers,” have trees and plants growing on the outside. In Milan, a 44-story building has 800 trees.

In the Netherlands, a low-income apartment building has trees on all sides. People are also bringing trees into their homes. Some build their houses around existing trees.

Others plant new trees inside. Ryoko Okada, an architect in New York, says being around nature is very calming.

She tries to bring outdoor elements inside whenever possible. In Los Angeles, a design company created a modern home using the trees already on the property. They kept a large, old cork oak tree as the centerpiece.

Experts say it’s important to get advice before planting a full-size tree indoors. The tree needs the right conditions, like air, light, and soil, to stay healthy. It’s also important to research the tree to avoid attracting pests.

If a live tree isn’t possible, there are other ways to use them in design. One property used parts of a burned tree as a unique art piece inside the home. As cities grow, people are looking for ways to connect with nature.
