The iconic Avicii Arena in Stockholm has reopened after an extensive renovation and modernization project. The arena, formerly known as the Stockholm Globe Arena, is the world’s largest spherical building and a recognizable landmark in the city. The renovation was carried out by an international design team, including C.F. Møller Architects and schlaich bergermann partner (sbp), in collaboration with contractor NCC and client SGAF, which is fully owned by the city of Stockholm.

The goal was to update the arena’s original 1989 configuration to meet the demands of contemporary events while preserving its architectural heritage. One of the key features of the renovation is a sophisticated steel-ring construction supporting a retractable roof equipped with acoustic panels and a rigging system. The retractable panels provide unmatched acoustic optimization and can create intimate atmospheres for different events.

Other upgrades include enhanced gondola seating, new tiers, and modern lounges to elevate the visitor experience.

The new gondola seating offers unique views of the action, while the lounges present exclusive areas with spectacular perspectives of the arena’s architecture.

Structural engineers at sbp focused on upgrading the arena’s original structure to accommodate its new features. The innovative retractable acoustic panel system and rigging grid is ingeniously suspended within the inner curved ring structure and outer perimeter compression ring. This slender cable net structure supports the retractable panels and rigging elements and includes a walkable mesh for a large and safe working platform.

Kirsty Mitchell, senior project manager, said, “This project celebrates the past while embracing the future. Our design solutions honour the arena’s iconic architecture while introducing innovative features that ensure its relevance for decades to come.”

Mårten Leringe, partner and architect at C.F. Møller Architects, added, “By blending technical innovation with intelligent design, we have ensured that the arena continues to be a cultural and architectural landmark.”

The modernization of Avicii Arena is a significant part of Stockholm’s broader urban regeneration, aligning with sustainable practices to preserve and adapt existing structures. The arena’s enhanced flexibility ensures it can host a diverse array of events, from ice hockey and concerts to world-class cultural showcases, reinforcing the Avicii Arena’s and Stockholm’s role as a central hub for community connection and international entertainment.

The reopening event featured a historic sold-out performance by Swedish cult band Kite, who gave their first-ever concert on ice, heralding a new era of unforgettable events at the arena.
