`Dog Man dominates U.K. and Ireland box office`

Dog Man, the animated film based on Dav Pilkey’s popular book series, has taken the U.K. and Ireland box office by storm. The family-friendly movie earned an impressive £3.2 million ($4 million) in its opening weekend, according to Comscore. Disney’s live-action film A Complete Unknown slipped to second place, adding $1 million in its fourth weekend for a total of $12.4 million.

Frozen Kingdom, Disney’s animated prequel, held steady in third place with $869,889 in its eighth weekend, bringing its cumulative total to $37.6 million. Macbeth: David Tennant And Cush Jumbo, a filmed stage production of Shakespeare’s tragedy, grossed $858,637 in fourth place, with a total of $1.9 million. Paramount’s new release September 5, directed by Tim Fehlbaum and starring Peter Sarsgaard and John Magaro, debuted in fifth place with $793,853 from over 300 locations.

Universal’s awards contender The Brutalist grossed $581,023 in its third weekend for a total of $3.1 million.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 from Paramount earned $521,783 in its seventh week, pushing its total to $30.7 million.

Becoming Led Zeppelin, a Sony Pictures documentary about the legendary rock band’s rise, debuted in eighth place with $518,927. Warner Bros.’ sci-fi thriller Companion landed at No. 9 with a second-weekend earning of $455,324 and a total of $1.8 million.

Rounding out the top 10, Disney’s Moana 2 added $303,741 in its 11th weekend for a cumulative total of $51.7 million. Upcoming releases include the independent British drama Before Nikkah, Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy starring Renée Zellweger, and Disney’s Captain America: Brave New World with Anthony Mackie. Other notable films hitting theaters are Memoir of a Snail, The Sloth Lane, Heart Eyes, To A Land Unknown, and several Indian releases like Bromance, Painkili, Laila, Hum Aapke Hain Koun!, and Chhaava.
