Galleries unite at Frieze Los Angeles

George Rouy is having his second show with Hauser & Wirth, the gallery’s youngest artist. Rouy joined the gallery last May and his semi-abstract paintings stand out, but some of his work still feels unresolved. This raises concerns that his jump from the much smaller Hannah Barry gallery in London came too soon.

David Hammons’s seminal piece “Concerto in Black and Blue” is being restaged at Hauser & Wirth. The piece, which has not been exhibited since 2002, involves an unadorned gallery left in darkness with visitors given small blue flashlights to navigate the space. However, Hauser & Wirth’s airy courtyard and chic amenities did not invoke the intended claustrophobia and grittiness of the original presentation.

The Melrose Hill neighborhood in Hollywood continues to grow with new anchors like LAXART, now known as Brick, showing new work by Gregg Bordowitz. David Zwirner’s new three-story space is hosting a stellar exhibition of new paintings by Lisa Yuskavage, placing figures from across her oeuvre in various imagined artist studios.

In a smaller Zwirner space, rising sculptor Tau Lewis presents towering humanoid sculptures and a mixed-media installation titled “The Last Transmission (2024),” serving as a tribute to someone departed. Nearby, Charlie Engelman showcases curving sculptures in high-density urethane foam at Chateau Shatto, while Anders Ruhwald’s “Plant Works” at Morán Morán feature succulents emerging from rough-hewn ceramics. Commonwealth and Council in Koreatown present ear-like sculptures by Anna Sew Hoy and works by Julian Abraham “Togar,” examining sound as a tool of propaganda.

Southern Guild hosts two exhibitions: Manyaku Mashilo’s striking canvases and Cheick Diallo’s sleek designs. Rele Gallery presents a two-artist show featuring Shinique Smith and Marcellina Akpojotor. James Fuentes gallery is showcasing the range of octogenarian artist Pat Lipsky, reflecting a subtle evolution in her style.

Pop-up shows from other cities’ galleries round out Melrose Hill, including House of Seiko staging an exhibition of Bay Area artist Ariel Parkinson and Mariposa contributing exhibitions that blend into each other. As Frieze Los Angeles continues to expand, the city’s diverse and growing art scene offers a vibrant array of exhibitions and shows, confirming LA’s status as a significant player in the global art world.
