James Gunn has confirmed that a new Wonder Woman movie is in development for the DC Universe (DCU). The film will be separate from the previously announced “Paradise Lost” HBO series. Gunn stated, “‘Wonder Woman’ is a separate thing [from the ‘Paradise Lost’ show] […] We’re working on ‘Wonder Woman.’ ‘Wonder Woman’ is being written right now.”
This announcement comes as a surprise given the reception of 2020’s “Wonder Woman 1984” and the situation between Gal Gadot and DC Studios regarding the now-defunct Wonder Woman 3.
However, this development could signal positive news for another major DC character: The Flash. The Flash has had a rocky cinematic career, with Ezra Miller’s portrayal failing to generate much interest. The character’s appearances in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” “Suicide Squad,” and “Justice League” were met with disappointment.

Even the standalone 2023 feature received mixed reviews despite being a monumental release for Warner Bros. Moreover, the controversies surrounding Ezra Miller made it seem like The Flash would be sidelined, similar to Green Lantern after the 2011 film flopped.
In December 2024, James Gunn revealed there would be a delay before a Flash movie entered development, stating, “[As for ‘The Flash’], we’re holding a beat on development.”
However, with Wonder Woman getting another chance and six months passing since Gunn’s comment, the prospect of The Flash receiving another standalone feature seems stronger. Though his first film wasn’t successful, approaching the character from a different angle could allow him to connect with audiences, as seen with Spider-Man, Captain America, and Batman in recent years. The Flash IP has potential to succeed on the big screen, so fans hope he’ll get another shot at making his mark in Hollywood.
The DCU’s first feature film, “Superman: Legacy,” is set to release on July 11, 2025.
