John Carpenter discusses potential directing return
6 Min Read

John Carpenter has not directed a movie since 2010’s “The Ward.” But the horror master has been busy with music, comic books, and other projects. Carpenter will receive his Hollywood Walk of Fame star in April. He is also playing music live in LA and NY.

Carpenter was asked if he has plans to return to directing. “I would love to direct again, given the right circumstances,” he said. “But I’m not the same kid anymore who will do it for any amount of money.

I can’t back into a smaller budget anymore. I’m too old. It’s too hard.

But directing is the love of my life. I’ll never stop loving that.”

In 2019, Carpenter said he would love to make a horror film. But it must be a project he likes with a proper budget.

“Nowadays they make young directors do movies for $2 million when the movie is written for $10 million. So, you have to squeeze it all in there and I don’t want to do that anymore,” he explained. Interestingly, Carpenter did return to directing in 2023.

He directed an episode of the Peacock series “Suburban Screams” remotely from his home. Blumhouse’s “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2” is coming out this December. Jason Blum promised an update on the movie in one week, on April 2.

Fans think it could be the first teaser trailer. Matthew Lillard will likely return as the villain William Afton. Jim Henson’s Creature Shop will again handle the animatronics.

The movie will be in theaters and on Peacock on December 5, 2025. In other horror news:

John Carpenter has mixed feelings about Los Angeles, as seen in his 1996 movie “Escape From L.A.” But despite challenges in the entertainment industry, Carpenter has thrived in his adopted hometown of 57 years.

As he prepares to get his Hollywood Walk of Fame star on April 3, Carpenter is focusing on his love for LA rather than his movies.

Carpenter’s Hollywood recognition and future plans

He is at peace with his legacy.

Carpenter is known for horror, sci-fi, and action. But he has also made romance, comedy, and social commentary films. Fans especially love “Escape From New York” and “The Thing,” which is now considered a classic.

In recent years, Carpenter has focused more on music. He composes synth-heavy scores for most of his films. His music career has grown since the mid-2010s.

He performs live with his son Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies. They will play in LA this fall, including on Halloween. Carpenter said getting a star is significant because he will be part of the Hollywood landscape.

He never expected it when he first came to LA from Kentucky. He said playing music is joyful with no pressure. When asked if he plans to direct again, Carpenter said he would love to, given the right circumstances.

But he cannot work with a small budget anymore at his age. He said directing is the love of his life and he will never stop loving it. Filmmakers Bong Joon-ho and John Carpenter have agreed to work together on a new horror movie.

The news was shared at a screening of Carpenter’s “The Thing” in LA. During a Q&A, Bong asked Carpenter if he would be interested in scoring another film. Carpenter said, “I wanna do your score.” The two shook hands and the audience cheered.

Details about Bong’s new film are unclear. But in 2021, he said one of his upcoming Korean movies is set in Seoul and has elements of horror and action. Bong has not made a full horror film yet.

The closest was 2006’s “The Host,” a monster movie. Carpenter, 77, is known as the “Master of Horror.” He has made many classics like “Halloween” and “They Live.” He also composes music for many of his films. Bong is currently promoting his sci-fi movie “Mickey 17” starring Robert Pattinson.

It was delayed due to the Hollywood strikes. But it is now set to release in March 2024. Fans are excited to see what Bong and Carpenter create together in the horror genre.
