Kamal Haasan, the renowned actor, director, and political figure, has once again found himself at the center of a controversy following his remarks about the Kannada language. During a graduation speech at MIT, Haasan suggested that Kannada was derived from Tamil, sparking outrage in Karnataka. The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) has threatened to ban Haasan’s upcoming film Thug Life, a major Tamil release that reunites him with director Mani Ratnam after nearly four decades.

This is not the first time Haasan has faced backlash for his comments or creative choices. In the past, his films such as Thevar Magan, Virumaandi, Dasavathaaram, and Vishwaroopam have faced opposition and temporary bans for allegedly promoting violence, anti-Muslim content, or hurting religious sentiments.

Criticism over Kannada comments

Despite the controversies, many of these films went on to achieve critical and commercial success, winning National Awards. Haasan has also been vocal about his political views, accusing Hindu groups of weaponizing festivals and referring to Nathuram Godse as “independent India’s first extremist.” His remarks have often led to public outrage and legal challenges. However, Haasan has never apologized for his choices, defending his work under the banner of artistic liberty.

The current controversy surrounding Thug Life continues, with additional backlash over his on-screen kiss with a much younger actor and suggestive dialogue in the trailer. As an artist and calculated entrepreneur, Haasan often emerges critically and commercially successful despite the controversies. Thug Life, co-produced by Haasan, Mani Ratnam, and Udhayanidhi Stalin’s Red Giant Movies, is slated to release on June 5, 2025.
