Kate Hudson regrets declining 'Devil Wears Prada'

Kate Hudson has reflected on turning down the lead role in “The Devil Wears Prada.” She says she “should’ve made it happen.”

During an interview with Capital Breakfast, Hudson was asked which role she most regretted turning down. She immediately mentioned “The Devil Wears Prada.”

Hudson revealed that scheduling conflicts prevented her from taking on the role of aspiring journalist Andy Sachs in the 2006 comedy. “That was a bad call,” she admitted.

“It was a timing thing, it was one of those things where I couldn’t do it, and I should’ve made it happen, and I didn’t.”

While Hudson maintains that “everything happens for a reason,” she still expressed regret over not making it work. The film, directed by David Frankel, went on to become a box office hit.

Hudson’s missed opportunity

It grossed $327 million and solidified Anne Hathaway’s role as Andy Sachs among her most iconic performances. “It’s funny. It’s waves of things that are happening and people shooting at different times,” Hudson said.

“It’s not like you don’t do them because you don’t want to do them. It’s like, ‘Oh, you’re doing something else.’ And it just sucked, you know?”

Anne Hathaway, who eventually landed the role of Andy Sachs, revealed in a different interview that she wasn’t the first choice. “I will give you some tea; I was the ninth choice for ‘Devil Wears Prada,'” Hathaway said during an appearance on “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” “But I got it! Hang in there, never give up.”

Hudson’s reflection on the missed opportunity adds to the lore of “The Devil Wears Prada.” The film continues to resonate with audiences nearly two decades after its release.
