Ne Zha 2 reaches $2.1 billion globally

The animated film “Ne Zha 2” has reclaimed the top spot at the China box office. It earned $4 million over the weekend, pushing its total gross to $2.116 billion. The film is now in its twelfth weekend and continues to be the highest-grossing title of 2025.

“We Girls,” directed by Feng Xiaogang, took second place with $3.8 million in its third weekend. The film follows Gao Yuexiang, who takes a desperate action to afford a cochlear implant for her daughter. In prison, she forms a bond with fellow inmates despite their differences.

“Mortal Kombat,” a video game adaptation from Warner Bros. and Legendary, came in third with $2.9 million. It has grossed $24.2 million in China so far.

“Mumu,” directed by Mo Sha, stayed in fourth place with $1.7 million, bringing its total to $17.5 million. The film is about a seven-year-old girl who grows up in a deaf community with her father until her estranged mother returns.

Ne Zha 2 reclaims top spot

“Fox Hunt,” a political thriller from Shanghai Film Group, rounded out the top five with $1.6 million. It now stands at $9.1 million. The total weekend box office reached $20.2 million, slightly lower than the previous frame.

However, the 2025 year-to-date gross rose to $3.51 billion, a 39% increase compared to the same period last year. Hand-drawn posters by “Ne Zha 2” director Jiaozi are on display at the Beijing International Film Festival. Jiaozi created a poster for each milestone, with one for every 100 million yuan in earnings.

The film has become a worldwide phenomenon, grossing $2.15 billion globally and ranking as the fifth highest-grossing film of all time. “Ne Zha 2” is also getting an all-star English dub for release in the U.S. and Australia. Distributor Trinity CineAsia is securing screens and planning a marketing campaign.

Cedric Behrel, managing director of Trinity CineAsia, said, “The release of ‘Ne Zha 2’ in Europe has been extraordinary. We only started about a month ago, and it’s already become the highest-grossing Chinese film in Europe in 20 years.”

The film, directed by Yu Yang and based on Xu Zhonglin’s novel “Investiture of the Gods,” had a budget of $80 million and grossed $742 million at the box office. It broke through as the highest-grossing animated movie ever, surpassing “Inside Out 2.” With its cinematic scope and imaginative storytelling, “Ne Zha 2” is set to continue its success as it enters English-speaking markets.
