netflix acquires Sundance hit Train Dreams

Netflix has acquired the Sundance drama “Train Dreams” starring Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones. The film, directed by Clint Bentley, received rave reviews at the festival for its lyrical storytelling and powerful performances. “Train Dreams” tells the story of Robert Grainier, a logger whose work developing America’s railroad keeps him laboring in isolation.

Adapted from Denis Johnson’s 2011 novella, the screenplay was co-written by Bentley and Greg Kwedar, who previously collaborated on the Oscar-nominated script for “Sing Sing.”

The cast also includes Kerry Condon, William H. Macy, and Clifton Collins Jr., who starred in Bentley’s previous Sundance drama “Jockey.” The film is fully financed by Black Bear, the production company behind “Sing Sing,” strengthening their ongoing relationship with the filmmakers.

Despite a sluggish market at Sundance, “Train Dreams” is seen as a standout with significant awards potential. Critics have likened Bentley’s approach to that of Terrence Malick, with Peter Debruge calling the film a “modest monument” and praising it for “creating a record that history somehow missed.”

WME Independent represented the filmmakers in the sale to Netflix. The acquisition ensures a broad potential audience for the film, though it is hoped that the streamer will give it a proper theatrical release to showcase its spectacular visuals and epic spirit.

“Train Dreams” is being hailed as one of the great highlights of this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Its success marks another triumph for Bentley and his collaborators, cementing their status as rising talents in the indie film world.
