The Oscar-winning documentary “No Other Land” is coming to Kalamazoo for a rare screening. The film, which is not available on any U.S. streaming services, will be shown at the Dormouse Theatre on Saturday, May 4. Monoform Cinema, a Kalamazoo-based independent cinema, is hosting the event.
The film has faced distribution challenges due to its strong political message and has only been shown in select small theaters in Michigan. “Films like ‘No Other Land’ often struggle to find a distributor in the U.S. for wide-scale theatrical release, especially those with strong political messages,” said Carman Goodrich, one of the founders of Monoform Cinema.
Oscar-winning film to screen
The documentary, directed by a Palestinian-Israeli collective, chronicles the destruction in Israeli-occupied Palestinian territory in the West Bank. It also explores the relationship between Palestinian activist Basel Adra and Israeli journalist Yuval Abraham. Monoform Cinema collaborated with the Grand Rapids Film Society to secure the rights to air the film.
Goodrich emphasized that airing “No Other Land” aligns with their mission to showcase films with significant societal and cultural impact. The screening will begin at 8:30 p.m., with doors opening at 7:30 p.m. Monoform Cinema is also working with local advocacy groups to possibly host a featured speaker at the event. Tickets are available starting at $5.
