Shea McGee recently shared insights on how she made a large, open-plan living room feel cozy and inviting despite its expansive scale. The designer faced the challenge of navigating the lofty architecture while creating a welcoming atmosphere in her latest project. McGee’s approach focused on incorporating low-profile furniture that enhanced the beautiful outdoor views.
“I didn’t want to lose the view and neither did our clients,” she explained. “There are views on both sides of the windows, so we made sure to add lower profile chairs and a daybed on one side. This allows seating or you can lay down and the height won’t obstruct the view.”
The designer opted for unique yet coordinated pieces, such as plush ottomans and a striped daybed, both muted in tone and soft in shape.
These choices contributed to a connected look that exemplifies McGee’s iconic style.
Designing warm, expansive living rooms
“The furniture selections in this living room are really interesting and engaging, and I love the way they work together in harmony but each piece is very beautiful on its own,” she said.
Practicality and the client’s needs were also considered in the design process. “We got a large sofa which is comfortable for this family of five,” McGee noted. The plush furniture was purposefully contrasted by a statement wood coffee table that connected to the outdoor scenery.
“The living room is huge, so we needed an 84-inch coffee table,” she added. By carefully considering the overall intention behind her design and incorporating elements that highlighted the home’s architecture and views, Shea McGee successfully transformed an expansive living room into a warm and inviting space. Her approach demonstrates the importance of balancing scale, functionality, and aesthetic appeal when designing large, open-plan areas.
