The annual Lambeth Country Show in London’s Brockwell Park featured a vegetable sculpture contest that captivated visitors with its quirky and creative entries. The two-day event showcased an array of impressive sculptures, including a “Squash Donald Trump” likeness of the U.S. President and a papal-themed display called “Cornclave,” featuring cardinals made of maize. Other notable entries included the Irish rap trio Kneecap depicted in potato form, singer Dolly Parton as “Cauli Parton,” and a vegetable tableau titled “9 to Chive.” A “Mo Salad” sculpture paid tribute to the animated characters Wallace and Gromit, crafted from butternut squash.
The contest also touched on local politics, with actor Mark Rylance humorously depicted as “Mark Rylunch,” complete with an apple-carved head and satirical signs branding him a NIMBY (not in my backyard) campaigner.
Vegetable artistry delights festival attendees
This was in reference to some residents’ opposition to the city hosting large events in parks like Brockwell to generate revenue.
Fair regular Maddy Luxon expressed her excitement about the vegetable sculptures, saying, “It’s just so unique, so witty, and we love the political ones.” Her companion Marek Szandrowski added, “And the puns. The vegetable puns, definitely.”
The Lambeth Country Show continues to draw crowds, showcasing the imaginative and humorous spirit of London’s creative community. The event also features sheep-shearing, livestock competitions, food, and music, making it a popular attraction for locals and visitors alike.
