Sufjan Stevens has released a previously unheard demo version of “Death With Dignity” from his 2015 album Carrie & Lowell. The demo will be included in the forthcoming 10th Anniversary Edition of the album, set for release on May 30. The new edition will feature six other bonus tracks, a 40-page photo booklet, and an essay written by Stevens.

It offers fans a deeper look into the creation of an album that has resonated deeply over the past decade. Last year, Stevens commemorated the 20th anniversary of his 2004 album Seven Swans with a special reissue. The prolific musician has continually provided listeners with rare and cherished material.

Sufjan Stevens shares unreleased demo

Carrie & Lowell, which dives into poignant memories and personal stories, has remained a cornerstone of Stevens’ discography and a fan favorite since its original release. His unique blend of folk and electronic music has earned him a reputation as one of the most innovative artists of his generation.

The demo of “Death With Dignity” is just as much of a tearjerker as the album version, perhaps even more so. While his vocals on the album version sound distant, they’re clearer and more intimate on this demo. It feels like he’s singing directly to you.

Carrie & Lowell 10th Anniversary Edition will be released on May 30 via Asthmatic Kitty. Fans can look forward to a deeper exploration of this acclaimed album and the opportunity to hear previously unreleased material from the recording sessions.
