Broad Expansion

The Broad, a contemporary art museum in downtown Los Angeles, has begun construction on a $100 million expansion project. The expansion will increase the museum’s gallery space by 70 percent and is expected to be completed before the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Since opening in 2015, The Broad has consistently attracted over one million visitors annually.

In March 2025, the museum set a record with 6,800 visitors in a single day. Edythe L. Broad, who co-founded the museum with her late husband Eli Broad, expressed her delight at the museum’s success, stating, “It has succeeded beyond my and Eli’s wildest dreams.

Expanding the museum reflects our belief in the importance of art as a resource for everyone and in the vision Eli and I shared for Los Angeles as a world art capital.”

The architectural firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro, responsible for the original design of The Broad, will lead the expansion project.

The Broad’s transformative expansion project

The initial design featured a “veil and vault” concept, with a white honeycomb structure encompassing a grey concrete core.

The expansion will invert this concept, bringing the concrete outside to interface with passersby. The plans include open courtyards and an art storage gallery that allows visitors to explore typically hidden areas, such as painting racks on the second floor. The Broad has maintained a collection of over 2,000 artworks from renowned artists like Jeff Koons, Barbara Kruger, Takashi Murakami, Cindy Sherman, and Andy Warhol.

General admission has been free since the museum’s inception and will remain so post-expansion. The groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion coincides with a recent decision by the L.A. County Board of Supervisors to establish a new cultural district along the Grand Avenue corridor. This district will include other major cultural institutions, such as the Museum of Contemporary Art, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and the Music Center.
