The Charlotte skyline has a new look after Wells Fargo installed a massive sign atop its Uptown tower over the weekend. The bank hoisted 14-foot red letters spelling out “Wells Fargo” on the 48-story building, formerly known as the Duke Energy Center, located at 550 South Tryon Street. The installation marks the first time the iconic skyscraper, which stands at 786 feet as the second-tallest building in Charlotte, has had any signage on its “handle” section.
The letters were transported and placed using a helicopter in a dramatic and visually striking operation that took place on Sunday. Wells Fargo announced that there will be several weeks of “installation activities,” including testing, before the signs officially go into use.

The company stated that the signage will “help elevate the Wells Fargo brand and build awareness for the company.”
Bank representatives emphasized that the new sign and enhanced lighting features are part of a broader initiative to strengthen community connections. Significant upgrades to the LED lighting system on the tower’s sides and top are also taking place, expanding the capabilities of the Wells Fargo Lights program, which illuminates the building in various colors to recognize different causes, programs, and community events throughout the year. The signage installation and lighting improvements are funded as part of Wells Fargo’s $500 million “employee experience investment” initiative, according to company officials.
Other skyscrapers in Charlotte with prominent signage include the Truist, Honeywell, and Ally buildings. The updated signage and lighting system are expected to add a vibrant touch to the Charlotte skyline, contributing to the city’s dynamic visual landscape and further cementing the bank’s presence in Uptown Charlotte.
