Mason Johnson, an 11-year-old boy from Wichita Falls, Texas, had a dream come true during his family’s spring break trip to New York City. While visiting Rockefeller Plaza in hopes of catching a glimpse of the “Today” show anchors, Mason got much more than he bargained for. Mason and his mother, Crystal Johnson, arrived early at the plaza before the live morning broadcast.

As they waited at security, they struck up a conversation with security manager Jack Radin. Mason, with his mother’s camera in hand, shared his passion for photography and his dream of becoming a news anchor. Impressed by the young photographer’s enthusiasm, Radin escorted Mason and his mother inside the building to watch the live broadcast in Studio 1A.

A dream day at Rockefeller Plaza

There, “Today” show photographer Nate Congleton took Mason under his wing, allowing him to observe the broadcast and even exchange cameras and photography tips. Crystal Johnson recalled, “Mason just popped into work mode, like he was showing up to work, and it was just another day at the office.”

After the taping, the anchors met with Mason and his mother outside at the plaza.

The highlight of the experience was meeting “Today” co-host Craig Melvin. Upon returning home, Mason’s impromptu adventure became the talk of the town. Local news stations ran stories about his experience, and he even received a standing ovation from his class at church.

Crystal Johnson expressed her gratitude, saying, “Just the fact that you guys cared, no matter what his age was, and just didn’t blow him off because he’s a child… It was literally the coolest thing that could have ever happened to my kid.”
