John Legend has expressed his sadness over the “devolution” of his former mentor and friend, Kanye West. In a recent interview, Legend spoke candidly about West, explaining that he is no longer the person who signed him to the G.O.O.D. Music record label back in 2004. “Back then, Kanye was very passionate, very gifted, and he had big dreams not only for himself but also for all the people around him,” Legend reflected.

“It does feel sad, sometimes shocking, to see where he is now.”

Legend noted that West has had numerous public breakdowns over the years, from making disparaging comments about his ex-wife Kim Kardashian to expressing a “shameless passion for all things Adolf Hitler.” John emphasized that he never imagined seeing such a side of West, adding, “It is sad to see his devolution.”

Although Legend acknowledged that it is inappropriate for people to psychoanalyze Kanye, he mentioned that there was “definitely a difference” in West’s mental state after his mother passed away in 2007. “His descent started then and seems to have accelerated recently,” Legend added.

Legend reflects on West’s decline

John Legend previously opened up about the end of his friendship with West, confirming in 2022 that they stopped speaking due to differences in their political beliefs. West is a well-known Donald Trump supporter, while John has been vocal about his sharp disapproval of Trump. Legend’s comments come shortly after ‘Real Housewives of New Jersey’ alum Siggy Flicker slammed West over his antisemitic rants and new “Heil Hitler” song.

Flicker, also a staunch Trump supporter, expressed that she believes karma will catch up with West due to his remarks about the Jewish people and his obsession with Hitler. She noted that he has already started to feel the repercussions. While Siggy Flicker’s and John Legend’s political views may differ, it appears they share common ground regarding their disapproval of West’s recent behavior.
