Michael B. Tretow, the acclaimed sound engineer credited with creating the iconic “ABBA sound,” has passed away at the age of 80. His son Rasmus Tretow and wife Malin Hertzman confirmed the news to Swedish media, with Görel Hanser, ABBA’s manager, also acknowledging the loss.

Tretow had been reportedly ill, though no specific cause of death has been released. ABBA’s members were quick to pay tribute to their beloved colleague and friend. Benny Andersson described Tretow as a “fantastic inspirer and joy-maker,” emphasizing his pivotal role: “You meant more to us four in ABBA than anyone else.

Our music lives on, and you are the one who made it timeless.”

Björn Ulvaeus echoed similar sentiments, saying, “His significance for ABBA cannot be overestimated. He was a warm, generous person and a good friend. Thanks, Micke, for all the laughs!”

Anni-Frid Lyngstad remarked on Tretow’s creative spirit: “You were the security in our little studio bubble with your never-ending creativity, warmth, and joy.

For us, you are forever part of the ABBA sound, and you will never be forgotten.”

Tretow began his career at Metronome Studios in Stockholm in 1967 and later worked at GLN studios before joining ABBA’s Polar Studios in 1978. Under his expertise, he contributed to all of ABBA’s albums except their most recent one, “Voyage” (2021). Even after ABBA’s split in the early 1980s, Tretow continued collaborating with Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson on various projects, including the hit musical “Chess.”

ABBA’s music, with its distinct sound engineered by Tretow, remains timeless and continues to touch millions.

As Björn aptly put it, “We miss you, Micke. Thanks for making our music sparkle.”
