Heartfelt Album

Sabrina Teitelbaum, known by her stage name Blondshell, has released her second album “If You Asked For A Picture.” The album builds on the themes and raw honesty of her self-titled debut from 2023. Teitelbaum, 28, grew up in New York City and spent her teenage years performing at open mic nights under various aliases. She kept her musical ambitions private from friends and family.

That changed with the buzz around her 2022 project Blondshell, which earned critical acclaim and spots on many year-end lists. On the new album, Teitelbaum continues to bare her soul through her music. “All the things I was saying in the songs were things that I didn’t feel comfortable saying to people in conversation,” she said.

“And I think that’s kind of still the case.”

The last two years have been filled with touring for Blondshell. “The whole reason I wanted to be a musician and put out albums is to play shows, and I’ve spent the last couple of years doing that,” Teitelbaum reflects. She has connected with a growing fan base across various territories.

“If You Asked For A Picture” reflects a shift from self-doubt to self-reflection.

Blondshell’s inner truth shared

Teitelbaum explains, “I’ve always been trying to have more acceptance of myself and the stuff around me because I honestly think that it makes life better if you know yourself and are okay with things.”

Writing without expectations allowed for an intimate and sincere follow-up.

“Most of the time when I’m writing, I’m still thinking that no one’s going to hear this; I’m not putting it out,” she says. “Everything’s so personal in all these songs, and it doesn’t feel so vulnerable to share that with strangers because there’s a layer of anonymity.”

The new album sees Teitelbaum expand her sound, blending folk and light country with her indie-rock roots. She focused on vocal harmonies and a richer soundscape with producer Yves Rothman.

Tracks like “Two Times” strip back production to highlight lyrics and vocals. Teitelbaum found inspiration in the poetry of Mary Oliver during the writing process. “There’s so much compassion for other people and how people’s personalities develop,” she recalls from Oliver’s work.

“If You Asked For A Picture” expertly captures the angst and emotional intensity of 1990s indie rock while offering fresh takes. Standout tracks like “T&A,” “Thumbtack,” and “Model Rockets” showcase Blondshell’s raw energy and vocal range. As Teitelbaum continues to share her inner truth through music, the world is eagerly listening to see where Blondshell will go next.

Her second album represents a significant step in her artistic journey, born from a place of self-reflection and courage.
