Steven Van Zandt, guitarist of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, is recovering after undergoing emergency surgery for appendicitis while on tour in Spain. The 74-year-old musician experienced sharp stomach pain following a show in San Sebastian on June 24, initially mistaking it for food poisoning. “Got lucky with an exceptional hospital in San Sebastian,” Van Zandt shared on social media.
“The operation was a complete success and I’m hoping to get back on stage for at least one of the shows in Milan.” The band is scheduled to perform in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, on June 27, followed by concerts in Milan on June 30 and July 3. Van Zandt’s absence comes as the Land of Hope and Dreams tour nears its conclusion, with only three dates remaining. The grand finale is set for July 3 at the San Siro Stadium in Milan.
Van Zandt’s health update
His return to the stage for this event would be a significant moment for fans and the band. In related news, the Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music will host an advance listening event on June 26 at Monmouth University in West Long Branch.
The event will offer a preview of songs from a new box set titled “Tracks II: The Lost Albums,” slated for release on June 27. The collection spans recordings from 1983 to 2018, showcasing Springsteen’s extensive career. Fans and fellow musicians alike are hoping for Van Zandt’s speedy recovery and looking forward to his return on stage.
“Thank you all for the good vibes. See you soon,” Van Zandt shared in his post.
