Drake has filed a defamation lawsuit against Universal Music Group over Kendrick Lamar’s diss track “Not Like Us.” The song accused Drake of being a “certified pedophile” and became a chart-topping hit last year. In the lawsuit filed on Wednesday in Manhattan federal court, Drake alleges that UMG prioritized “corporate greed” over his safety. He claims the song’s release led to violent attacks against him, including a drive-by shooting at his Toronto home.

Drake’s attorneys argue that the case is not against Kendrick Lamar but rather UMG. They accuse the label of using the song to profit despite knowing the lyrics were false and dangerous. UMG responded with a strong denial, calling the allegations “illogical.” They stated, “We have not and do not engage in defamation—against any individual.

We will vigorously defend this litigation to protect our people and our reputation.”

The lawsuit divulged new details, indicating Drake had confronted UMG privately and warned of risks to his safety. However, UMG allegedly refused to take action.

Drake’s lawyers contend UMG boosted “Not Like Us” to devalue Drake’s brand ahead of contract negotiations. They also accused UMG of orchestrating efforts to favor Lamar, such as securing him the Super Bowl halftime show, which contributed to the song’s massive popularity. “Even though UMG enriched itself and its shareholders by exploiting Drake’s music for years, and knew that the salacious allegations against Drake were false, UMG chose corporate greed over the safety and well-being of its artists,” his lawyers said.

This lawsuit comes just a day after Drake withdrew a separate case accusing UMG and Spotify of conspiring to artificially boost streams of “Not Like Us.” Both companies had denied those allegations.
