The beloved children’s series “CoComelon” is making the leap from YouTube to the big screen. Moonbug Entertainment and Flywheel Media have greenlit the first-ever animated feature film based on the popular series, with Universal Pictures set to release the movie in 2027. “CoComelon: The Movie” will be a CG animated film, produced in collaboration with Moonbug Entertainment, Flywheel Media, Prime Focus Studios, and DreamWorks Animation.

The animation will be provided by the DNEG Group. Details about the writer, director, and cast have not been announced yet. “CoComelon” is a children’s series designed to teach life skills through music.

The show reaches audiences in over 80 countries and boasts more than 4 billion average monthly views on YouTube.

DreamWorks teams up for CoComelon

It began as a YouTube channel in 2006 under a different name before rebranding to “CoComelon” in 2018.

The series was created by Jay Jeon and his wife through their company, Treasure Studio, Inc. It is available in more than 20 languages and has inspired spin-offs such as Netflix’s “CoComelon Lane,” “Nina’s Familia,” and “JJ’s Animal Time.”

In 2020, British media company Moonbug Entertainment acquired Treasure Studio and “CoComelon.” Shortly after, Candle Media, a Blackstone-backed company led by former Disney executives Kevin Mayer and Tom Staggs, acquired Moonbug for a reported $3 billion. Since then, the franchise has expanded into consumer products, streaming music, games, and live entertainment.

Fans of “CoComelon” can look forward to the brand’s continued growth and evolution as it brings its educational and entertaining content to new platforms and formats. While specific financial details have not been disclosed, the production model for the “CoComelon” movie is expected to be similar to that of “The Angry Birds” film franchise. This suggests that Moonbug, the IP owner, will cover the majority of production and marketing costs, potentially leading to greater risks and rewards for them compared to Universal and DreamWorks.
