Frank Lloyd Wright, one of America’s most renowned architects, designed a home in South Bend, Indiana that is now up for sale. The K.C. DeRhoades House, completed in 1906, is a prime example of Wright’s early work and his only Prairie-style residence in the state. The nearly 3,000-square-foot home features four bedrooms and showcases Wright’s signature design elements.
These include bold horizontal lines, overhanging eaves, ample built-ins, an open floor plan, and natural materials. The house boasts 65 original art glass windows, custom built-ins, and period lighting. “It’s a living work of art,” said Steve Bizzaro, the co-listing agent for the property, in a statement.
“With 65 original art glass windows, custom built-ins, and period lighting, the home showcases Wright’s signature harmony between architecture and artistry.”
The prairie-style abode opens into a warm reception hall, followed by a living room with an original brick fireplace, a formal dining room, and a tastefully updated kitchen.
Frank Lloyd Wright’s Indiana treasure
All five bedrooms are located upstairs, including a primary suite with its own fireplace and a wall of art glass windows.
Terraces span the front and back of the house. Former inhabitants Suzanne and Tom Miller, who took up residence in 1978, undertook a painstaking restoration of the property. They restored each of the home’s 65 windows and refinished extensive woodwork.
The couple earned a posthumous Wright Spirit Award for their efforts in 2021. The current owners have added modern touches, such as bathroom and kitchen upgrades, air conditioning, and a driveway with an electric vehicle charger. The half-acre lot, located in South Bend’s historic West Washington District, has been carefully maintained for the past several decades.
The K.C. DeRhoades House is listed for $1.17 million and stands as a testament to Wright’s architectural genius and a piece of living history in Indiana.
