In 2025, interior design is undergoing a major shift away from the minimalist, gray-dominated trends of the past decade. According to Lucy Sutherland, an interior design expert at furniture retailer Temple and Webster, people are now embracing bold colors, textures, and personal touches in their homes. “We are moving away from plain minimalism and going into some really interesting, colorful texture trends,” Sutherland told the media.
She described this change as “a bit of a revolt” against the “soulless” interior design fad that involved perfectly coordinated furniture, art, and colors. Sutherland explained that the pandemic played a significant role in this shift, as people spent more time in their homes and wanted to create spaces that reflected their personalities and provided comfort. “We started putting in pieces that we loved – things that reminded us of happier times, like travel and fashion.
It felt like a move towards homes that were cozy, comfortable, and a real reflection of who we were,” she said.
A shift to individuality
Earth tones and retro decor are also making a comeback, with Sutherland noting that “it was really about bringing the colors and textures of nature into our homes.” Layering plush fabrics, linens, rattans, and even cork is key to creating a cocoon-like atmosphere.
For those who prefer a playful, feminine aesthetic, Sutherland suggested the “dollhouse chic” trend. Another exciting development is the revival of 1970s style, with side tables appearing in deep red tones with high-gloss finishes and the re-emergence of conversation pits. Fringe details, such as fringed cushions and tassels, are also adding a fun touch to interiors.
“For people who lived through the ’70s, it might have been an era they never wanted to see again, but now, enough time has passed for it to feel fresh and exciting,” Sutherland said. As homeowners embrace these new trends, it’s clear that the days of minimalist, gray-dominated interiors are numbered. Instead, 2025 is all about creating warm, inviting spaces that reflect personal style and provide a sense of comfort and connection.
