Paul McCartney is pushing for his friend and fellow musician Joe Cocker to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. McCartney recently wrote an open letter to the Rock Hall’s voting body, urging them to consider Cocker for the class of 2025. Cocker, who passed away in 2014, is on the shortlist of nominees this year.
In his letter, McCartney described Cocker as a “great man and a fine singer” with a “unique style” that led to “fantastic performances.”
McCartney specifically highlighted Cocker’s cover of the Beatles song “With a Little Help From My Friends,” calling it “very imaginative.” The song, produced by Denny Cordell, became a hit for Cocker in 1968 and was famously performed at Woodstock.
McCartney’s push for Cocker’s induction
“All the people on the panel will be aware of the great contribution Joe made to the history of rock and roll,” McCartney wrote.
“And while he may not have ever lobbied to be in the Hall of Fame, I know he would be extremely happy and grateful to find himself where he deserves to be amongst such illustrious company.”
Rock Hall chairman John Sykes expressed support for Cocker’s induction, calling him a “deserving name.” However, the final decision rests with the Hall of Fame’s voting body. McCartney successfully advocated for the band Foreigner’s induction last year. The 2025 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony will take place in Los Angeles in the fall, with an exact date yet to be announced.
Cocker has been eligible for induction since 1994.
