It has crossed the $200 million mark in the U.S. and Canada, becoming the first original film to do so in eight years. The last original movie to reach this milestone was Pixar’s “Coco” in 2017.

“Sinners” has now surpassed that total, with an estimated domestic gross of $216 million after four weekends in theaters.

The film’s performance remains strong despite losing Imax screens to Marvel Studios’ “Thunderbolts.” Its weekend earnings are higher than the opening weekend of any horror film since “Smile 2” last October. “Sinners” was a significant risk for Warner Bros., with a reported $90 million budget and a unique agreement granting film rights back to Coogler in 25 years.

However, the gamble has paid off, with the film projected to surpass $300 million worldwide in the coming week, ensuring profitability from its theatrical run. The film’s early Oscar buzz suggests potential for strong post-theatrical revenue through premium on-demand and Blu-Ray sales. It is also expected to boost streaming subscriptions upon its release on Max.

“Sinners” is on track to gross at least $275 million domestically. This would make it the highest-grossing live-action original film before inflation adjustment since “Gravity” in 2013.

Surpassing $292 million domestically would place it above “Inception” as the highest-grossing original film of the past 15 years. Crossing $300 million would make “Sinners” the first original film to do so since “Avatar,” the highest-grossing film of all time. The film’s success could place it in Hollywood’s horror hall of fame, alongside other landmark horror films like “Get Out,” “A Quiet Place,” “Halloween,” “Scream,” “Saw,” and “Paranormal Activity.”

Jordan stars in “Sinners,” a Southern vampire tale set in the 1930s. Director Ryan Coogler did not initially envision the film as the start of a series, but its substantial success suggests it could easily evolve into a franchise if he decides to pursue it. The film’s unique storyline and Jordan’s performance, combined with Coogler’s direction, have resonated with audiences globally, contributing to its potential landmark success.

“Sinners” is bringing audiences back for repeat viewing and expanding its audience, impressing industry observers. The success of “Sinners,” along with the video game adaptation “Minecraft” grossing $900 million globally, marks a significant achievement for Warner Bros. These films are notable successes for Warner Bros.

Motion Picture Group co-chairs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy, validating their strategy of focusing on auteur-driven and original projects.
