The Space Needle is getting a major upgrade with the unveiling of its new Skyliner elevator. The double-decker, all-glass elevator is the first of its kind in North America. Each cab of the Skyliner features floor-to-ceiling glass walls.
This allows riders to see unique views of Seattle and the inner workings of the Space Needle as they ascend to the top. The Skyliner is part of the Space Needle’s $100 million modernization project. The privately funded effort began its design phase in 2022.
“This elevator is truly one of a kind,” said Grant Berryhill, Senior Project Manager at Otis Elevator Company. “It has glass all around it—front, back, and sides.
New double-decker elevator unveiled
This allows guests to see unparalleled views of Puget Sound, downtown Seattle, Rainier, and Queen Anne.”
Original plans for the Space Needle included double-deck, spaceship-style elevators when it was constructed for the 1962 World’s Fair. However, the technology and time constraints of the era prevented this vision from becoming a reality until now. The unveiling of the Skyliner marks the first of three elevators to be replaced by 2028.
Otis, the world’s largest manufacturer of vertical transportation systems, built the original Space Needle elevators and is leading the modernization project. “This investment ensures the Space Needle remains a symbol of Seattle’s innovative spirit for future generations,” said Karen Olson, Space Needle Chief Operating Officer. The next double-decker elevator is slated for completion in 2027.
The replacement of the service elevator facing downtown is expected by 2028. The Space Needle’s modernization reflects the evolution of this Seattle icon. It also opens up new possibilities for its future, ensuring it continues to inspire and captivate visitors for years to come.
