President Donald Trump announced plans to install two new flagpoles on the White House lawns during a walk with Dale Haney, the head White House groundskeeper. Each flagpole will stand nearly 100 feet tall and prominently display an American flag. “We’re putting up a beautiful, almost 100-foot-tall American flag,” Trump told reporters, emphasizing that the flagpoles would be “top of the line.” He noted that this initiative fulfills a long-standing need, stating, “You know, they don’t have a flagpole, per se.
So we’re putting one right where you saw us, and we’re putting another one on the side on top of the mounds. It’s going to be two beautiful poles.”
The president confirmed that he would personally cover the cost of the flagpoles, which are expected to arrive at the White House within a week. The White House currently flies an American flag from a rooftop flagpole, which is always flown regardless of the president’s presence.
Trump’s new White House flagpoles
Additionally, the POW/MIA flag has been flown at the White House since 2019. This addition is part of Trump’s ongoing efforts to leave his personal mark on the White House.
The president is also overseeing an overhaul of the Oval Office, and new artwork featuring Trump himself is being installed in various parts of the presidential residence. Trump’s hands-on approach was evident as he discussed the specifics of the new flagpoles with Haney and other staff members. The president was flanked by his team as he walked along the fence line, engaging in animated conversations about the modifications.
These changes align with Trump’s history of branding and personalizing spaces, and are seen as symbolic gestures demonstrating his patriotism and desire to reshape the presidential environment. The president emphasized the patriotic significance of these installations ahead of the 250th anniversary of America’s independence, for which he announced plans to create a task force to oversee the celebrations.
