Warner Bros. Animation presented a sneak peek of their upcoming feature film “Cat in the Hat” at the Annecy Animation Festival. The movie, based on Dr.

Seuss’ beloved character, will take audiences on a journey through three distinct worlds. Co-directors Alessandro Carloni and Erica Rivinoja, along with the art team, shared details about the film’s unique concept. The story follows Gabby and Sebastian, two siblings unhappy about moving to a new place due to their mother’s job.

The mother is voiced by actress America Ferrera. The Cat, assigned to help the kids, takes them on adventures through three universes: the real world, Seuss’ world, and the boxes’ world. Seuss’ world, where the Cat originates, features a whimsical aesthetic heavily inspired by Dr.

Seuss’ style. The character of Seuss’ boss appears to be voiced by Giancarlo Esposito.

The boxes’ world is a creative concept where the moving boxes of Sebastian, Gabby, and their mother come to life, each reflecting the characters’ inner emotions and memories. Sebastian’s box is ocean-themed, representing his desire to reconnect with his sister, while Gabby’s box portrays her nostalgia for her old life as a “band nerd.”

Production designer Aidan Sugano and art director Amos Sussigan described the visually rich landscapes that explore each character’s core identity through imaginative, abstract designs. Gabby’s mother’s box, filled with paperwork, transforms into a celestial galaxy reflecting her personality as an overwhelmed nurse.

The film aims to capture the essence of Dr. Seuss’ original work through its vibrant use of color and whimsical style. Carloni teased the Cat’s persona, hinting that he may be more than just a chaotic figure, but rather a profound child psychologist who knows how to bring joy to bored kids.
