Sean “Diddy” Combs, the well-known rapper and music mogul, made a rare statement during the first day of his trial in New York City on May 5, 2025. As jury selection began, Combs told U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian, “I’m sorry, your honor, I’m a little nervous today.”
The statement came after Combs’ defense attorney asked for a quick bathroom break, with the judge suggesting waiting. “I’m a machine,” the judge responded.

Combs has been incarcerated for months without bail, so the public hasn’t heard much from him directly.

In another significant moment on day one of the trial, prospective jurors were read a list of names and asked whether they recognized them. The other celebrities mentioned have not been accused of criminal wrongdoing.
By the end of the day, half of the jurors were excused for various reasons.

Combs “hugged and shook hands with his attorney.”
Federal courtrooms do not allow television cameras, but Combs’ appearance has changed in jail; he now has a goatee. The goatee and his hair are both “almost full gray” because the jail doesn’t allow dye. In court, Combs was dressed in a sweater over a white collared shirt and gray slacks.
Combs is accused of a series of very serious crimes, which he has denied. He faces allegations of engaging in or attempting to engage in sex trafficking, obstructing justice, forced labor, kidnapping, arson, and bribery. The indictment accuses Combs of abusing, threatening, and coercing women and others “for decades.” Prosecutors claim that he “relied on the employees, resources, and influence of the multi-faceted business empire that he led and controlled–creating a criminal enterprise.”
Prosecutors will have to prove these allegations in court beyond a reasonable doubt, and Combs has denied the accusations, rejecting a plea deal offered before the trial began.
Opening statements are expected to take place the following week.
