Zak Starkey, former drummer for Oasis, recently appeared on BBC Breakfast and expressed his disappointment at not being included in the band’s upcoming reunion tour. “I texted them and said, ‘Why am I not in it?'” Starkey shared. Starkey joined Oasis in 2004 and played with the band until 2008.
He had hoped to be part of the highly anticipated reunion shows but was not asked to participate. “You know, if you get a new drummer, you get comfortable, don’t you? You get comfortable with new musicians, and I think that’s what’s happened, and I’m all right with that,” Starkey explained.
Despite the snub, Starkey remains a big fan of Oasis. When asked if he would have joined the tour if given the chance, he enthusiastically replied, “God, yeah.
Zak Starkey’s Oasis reunion reaction
Greatest rock-and-roll band of my generation. Greatest rock-and-roll singer of my generation.”
The Oasis reunion tour is set to begin on July 4 in Cardiff, Wales, and will include stops in Manchester and Dublin. The band will then head to North America for a leg of shows starting in Toronto on August 24.
During his BBC Breakfast appearance, Starkey also addressed recent confusion surrounding his status with The Who. In April, it was reported that he had been fired from the band, but guitarist Pete Townshend later clarified that Starkey had not been let go. However, on May 18, Townshend announced that Starkey was no longer with the group.
Starkey explained the situation, saying, “I had a great phone chat with Roger [Daltrey] last week which truly confused both of us! Roger said I hadn’t been ‘fired’… I had been ‘retired’ to work on my own projects… We left it on good terms and as great friends as always.”
Currently, Starkey is promoting a new single with the supergroup Mantra of the Cosmos, which also features Bez and Shaun Ryder from the Happy Mondays, as well as former Oasis bassist Andy Bell.
