Drew Quartermaine has become one of the most hated characters on “General Hospital.” He has betrayed family members and engaged in plotlines that have turned him away from his once heroic persona. This has sparked intense reactions from viewers. Cameron Mathison, who plays Drew, recently appeared on “The Jennifer Hudson Show” to discuss the fan backlash.
He explained that he has almost always played the good guy or hero in his roles. So, the last eight months have been quite different for his character. Mathison shared a story about an aggressive encounter with a fan in a supermarket.
The fan threw an apple at him out of frustration with his character’s actions. Despite the negativity, Mathison seems to take it all in stride. He said, “The key is that people feel strongly about your character; whether they like you strongly or don’t like you, right?
It’s that neutral area that you don’t want. So I’ll take it.”
Drew’s downward spiral accelerated after his stint in Pentonville. He broke up with Carly and tried to send his daughter Scout off to boarding school.
Drew’s controversial new direction
These were just the beginning of his bizarre actions. Even though Drew had some good things going for him, like changing his last name to Quartermaine and running for Congress, his affair with Willow marked a turning point.
After this affair, his behavior got worse, and most of Port Charles turned against him. The Quartermaines, who had once accepted Drew, have now banned him from their house and grounds. Even Monica, who is usually forgiving towards her children, has turned her back on him.
Drew’s former best friend Curtis also wants nothing to do with him after being double-crossed. Is there any future left for Drew in Port Charles? His girlfriend looks at him with stars in her eyes, but her view may change once she discovers his affair with her mother.
Besides his girlfriend, Drew has no one left in Port Charles. Even his daughter Scout might prefer staying with Dante and her brothers rather than being stuck in a hotel room alone. Now that Drew is a congressman, perhaps it’s time for him to move to D.C. Few residents of Port Charles would miss him, and redemption seems out of reach.
At one point, Drew was loved by all, but it’s hard to see how he can regain that love now.
