'Insidious' live show canceled after outcry

The live horror show “Insidious: The Further You Fear” has been abruptly canceled after a string of disappointing performances. The show, based on the popular horror movie franchise, was marketed as an immersive experience promising iconic characters and 80 minutes of terror. However, audiences who attended the show’s initial stops, including a notorious performance at Detroit’s Fisher Theatre, felt let down and confused.

Dylan Sides, who paid around $100 per ticket for the Detroit show, described the experience as more comedic than terrifying. “When I walked out of the theater, it wasn’t even a sense of anger. Everyone was just as confused as I was,” Sides said.

“I wouldn’t even call it a parody because a parody would infer it’s funny.”

The heart of the issue appears to be the significant difference between the marketed experience and the actual performance. Sides explained, “Basically the only immersive part through the entire engagement was five volunteers who went up on stage.

They were put in white jumpsuits and it became painfully apparent they were all plants. And it’s like where’s the engagement? Where’s the immersive experience?

Why advertise it as that if they’re not going to try?”

Detroit was only the fourth stop on what was intended to be a 70-stop tour. The negative reception forced the production to cancel the remaining 66 stops, including two scheduled performances at Playhouse Square in Cleveland. Mark Ramos, a horror enthusiast who had already purchased tickets for the Texas show, received notification of the tour’s cancellation due to the backlash faced in Detroit.

“Don’t promote things where you’re overhyping it because as a true horror fan and fans of the film, you’re expecting one thing and getting another,” Ramos said. “It’s just not a good thing to do to the fans of the franchise.”

Officials with the Fisher Theatre are now in discussions with the production company to determine whether refunds will be possible for disappointed ticket holders. The Insidious Live Show’s organizers have yet to release an official statement addressing the cancellation or the overwhelming criticism from attendees.
