In a touching scene, he drops to one knee and offers her a ring made from one of his paper finger-traps. “I know I’m just an innie, but I love you all the way.
I do. I made this for you,” he says. Gretchen, already married to Dylan’s outie, starts crying and leaves.

The scene is beautifully acted by Zach Cherry and Merritt Wever, with Wever’s silent tears and Cherry’s desperate scream particularly striking. The finger-traps are incredibly meaningful to Dylan G. Innies don’t have many possessions, so turning one into a ring for Gretchen shows how much he cares.
Dylan’s heartfelt resignation and crisis
It’s a new level of heartbreak for one of the show’s most sympathetic characters. After Gretchen leaves, Dylan G.
has an existential crisis. Even Helly R.’s attempts to comfort him fail. He decides to quit, which means he will basically “die” as an innie.
Dylan fills out a resignation form, checking every box including “anger,” “fatigue,” “loneliness,” “guilt,” “shame,” and “annoyance.” Mr. Milchick scolds him, saying it “reeks of ingratitude.” Despite this and an odd apology from Miss Huang, Dylan seems resolute. He steps into the elevator, possibly for the last time.
Like his friend Irving B., Dylan may be leaving the severed floor forever. The season 2 finale, “Cold Harbor,” will reveal his ultimate fate when it airs on Apple TV+ on Thursday, March 20 at 9 P.M. EST.
