Jennifer Lopez debuts 'Kiss of the Spider Woman' at Sundance

Jennifer Lopez and Tonatiuh star in Bill Condon’s new musical adaptation of “Kiss of the Spider Woman.” The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to a standing ovation. Lopez plays Ingrid Luna, a fictional movie star, while Tonatiuh portrays Luis Molina, a queer window dresser imprisoned in Argentina during the “Dirty War.”

Molina escapes the horrors of prison by telling his cellmate, political prisoner Valentin Arregui, vivid stories about Ingrid Luna. The film shifts between Molina’s colorful movie fantasies and the harsh reality of prison life.

Tonatiuh delivers a breakout performance as Molina, embodying the power of cinema to provide refuge from life’s hardships. Despite the film’s technical competence and dazzling moments, some critics feel it lacks the deep passion and show-stopping numbers to truly capture the magic of movies. The constraints of the independent production are evident in the costume design and lighting choices, which fail to fully capture the opulence of Old Hollywood.

Jennifer Lopez shines at Sundance

Lopez and Tonatiuh deliver committed performances, but the film’s exploration of gender, sexuality, and revolution feels messy and muddled. The lack of chemistry between Tonatiuh and Diego Luna, who plays Arregui, also hinders the film’s emotional impact.

At the premiere, Lopez fought back tears as she expressed her lifelong dream of starring in a musical. Director Bill Condon, known for acclaimed musicals like “Chicago” and “Dreamgirls,” shared his excitement about the project and its message of love and kindness. “Kiss of the Spider Woman” is seeking distribution, with several studio and streaming executives in attendance at the Sundance premiere.
