Margaret Qualley recently shared that the prosthetics she wore while filming the horror movie “The Substance” caused significant damage to her skin. It took nearly a year for her face to recover from the breakouts caused by the irritating prosthetics. “At the end, when they’re shooting up my skirt in the beginning credits, and it’s like the palm trees all around and they have all these long lenses from the bottom, that’s just because my face was so messed up,” Qualley said during an appearance on Josh Horowitz’s “Happy, Sad, Confused” podcast.

The skin issues were so severe that filmmakers had to avoid close-up shots of Qualley’s face by the end of the shoot. The acne persisted even after filming wrapped, and Qualley’s natural skin, complete with the prosthetic-induced breakouts, can be seen in her subsequent film, Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Kinds Of Kindness.”

Despite the challenges, Qualley spoke positively about her experience working on “The Substance,” particularly when it came to her co-star Demi Moore.

However, she did describe the process of wearing a prosthetic suit towards the end of the film as a “torture chamber.”

“We would just go until I had a panic attack,” Qualley recounted. According to Moore, who discussed the film at the Golden Globe Awards, the process of applying and removing the prosthetics could take anywhere from six to nine and a half hours. “It took at least an hour and a half to get it all off,” Moore said.

“The Substance,” directed by French writer-director Coralie Fargeat, has been a critical and commercial success. The performances by Moore and Qualley have generated significant awards buzz, with Moore winning a Golden Globe for best performance by a female actor in a musical or comedy motion picture.
