Fiery Soundgarden

Shaina Shepherd, a Seattle-based R&B and soul singer, recently performed with the surviving members of the iconic grunge band Soundgarden at a charity event. The show, which took place at the Showbox in Seattle, was a benefit for SMooCH, an organization that raises funds for uncompensated care at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Shepherd joined Kim Thayil, Ben Shepherd, and Matt Cameron, who performed under the name Nudedragons, an anagram of Soundgarden.

The band played a six-song set, which included a guest appearance by Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan. The performance generated mixed reactions from fans, with some questioning whether Shepherd should continue to front the band. Soundgarden has been synonymous with its late lead singer, Chris Cornell, who passed away in 2017.

In response to the criticism, Shepherd took to social media to address her detractors. “Haters gonna hate while I live my dream,” she wrote.

Shepherd’s powerful response to critics

“Soundgarden is a revolutionary band that changed my life, your life, the world. I could never front Soundgarden. But I love making music with those guys.

I did it for me, for them like any other music endeavor. I don’t care what any of you think – never did. I care what they think – always will.”

Shepherd’s collaboration with Soundgarden’s members is a rare occurrence since Cornell’s death.

The band has only performed a handful of times, including a tribute concert in 2019 and a recent performance honoring the late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins. While the future of Soundgarden remains uncertain, Shepherd’s passion for the music and her commitment to performing with the band members is evident. The Nudedragons’ performance at the SMooCH benefit not only showcased their musical talents but also highlighted their dedication to supporting their community.
