Martin Parr documentary explores lasting impact

Martin Parr, a renowned British photographer, is the subject of a new documentary titled “I Am Martin Parr.” The film, directed by Lee Shulman, explores Parr’s five-decade career and his impact on photography. Shulman first encountered Parr’s work as a film student in the 1990s. He was particularly drawn to Parr’s photobook “The Last Resort,” which he found both humorous and poignant.

The documentary follows Parr on a road trip, starting in New Brighton, Merseyside, where he shot “The Last Resort.” The book, initially criticized for its perceived mockery of working-class holidaymakers, has since become a celebrated part of British culture. Parr’s work often focuses on themes of leisure and everyday life in Britain. His books explore various aspects of British culture, from tourist spots to home interiors.

Louis Little, head of production at the Martin Parr Foundation, suggests that Parr’s work reflects both the best and worst of society. Shulman’s goal with the documentary was to capture Parr’s genuine love for humanity and dismiss perceptions of cynicism.

Exploring Parr’s British cultural influence

“He celebrates ordinary life, and he’s influenced a whole generation, doing it with humility and absolutely no ego,” Shulman says. The film also highlights Parr’s lesser-known early black-and-white images before he transitioned to color photography in the 1980s. Contributors to the film include fellow photographer Bruce Gilden, artist Sir Grayson Perry, and Parr’s wife, Susie.

Parr’s influence remains strong in today’s photography community. Charlotte King, the studio manager at the Martin Parr Foundation, recounts his dedication to the community. French photographer Clémentine Schneidermann, who exhibited with the foundation, highlights the timeless and contemporary feel of Parr’s colorful and spontaneous style.

Despite some criticism of his work, Parr’s distinctive style—often termed ‘Parr-esque’—continues to be relevant and influential. “His popularity has only increased, and people are happy to see themselves reflected in his photographs,” says King. “I Am Martin Parr” will premiere in cinemas nationwide on February 21st, offering viewers an intimate look at the life and work of one of Britain’s most iconic photographers.
