Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol, the multitalented duo behind “Nirvanna the Band the Show,” have brought their absurd and heartwarming comedy to the big screen with “Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie.” The film had its world premiere at SXSW on March 9, 2025, nearly two decades after the original webshow debuted on YouTube. The movie follows Johnson and McCarrol playing caricatures of themselves, much like in the series. Their initial plan to book a show at Toronto’s famous bar, The Rivoli, involves parachuting off the CN Tower into Rogers Centre to attract fans.

When this fails, Matt accidentally creates a time machine, sending them back to 2008. This sets the stage for a hilarious adventure filled with self-aware humor and unpredictable mishaps. “Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie” is unique in its approach, taking an absurd story and infusing it with subtext and nuance through believable characters.

The best jokes come from fourth-wall breaks, with even the cameraman becoming a character. While there are some in-jokes for fans, newcomers will not be put off and may be encouraged to explore the show’s back catalog.

Amidst the comedy, there is genuine heart in the friendship between Jay and Matt. Their mutual dependence underscores the durability of their bond, with Jay acting as the straight man to Matt’s outrageous ideas. The film successfully translates the show’s humor and charm into a 90-minute feature, despite some dragging moments.

“Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie” received a five-minute standing ovation at its SXSW World Premiere and is a must-watch before the best jokes get spoiled. Additional screenings are scheduled for March 11-12 at the festival.
