Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. are back in the new trailer for “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” The trailer shows a group of friends at an engagement party. One of them, Danica, gets a card that says “I know what you did last summer.”

It turns out the group was in a deadly car accident a year ago on July 4, 2024.

They kept it a secret. Now someone is after them for what they did. The friends go to Ray Bronson and Julie James for help.

Hewitt and Prinze played them in the original 1997 movie. “You survived this once. We need your help,” Eva tells Julie.

The trailer has a fisherman chasing each friend. It ends with a close-up of Julie saying her famous line, “What are you waiting for?”

The new movie is based on the 1997 film. It’s about a group of friends who commit a hit-and-run and cover it up.

New faces and familiar threats

The director, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, said having Hewitt and Prinze back was a must. “There was no movie without them,” Robinson said.

She worked with them to figure out what their characters would be like today. “This movie is about how trauma informs and shapes and changes you,” she explained. The trailer has nods to the original, like a scene in the same pageant hall.

Robinson said paying homage was key, but in a way that fit the new story. Chase Sui Wonders, one of the new stars, was thrilled to work with Hewitt and Prinze. “They’re so involved in every step of the way,” she said.

“I’m on a texting basis with Jennifer Love. She’s a legend.”

Hewitt said her character Julie is edgier now and has learned to live with her trauma. “She’s funny in this movie, which I really appreciate,” Hewitt added.

“I Know What You Did Last Summer” comes out on July 18, 2025.
