Dave Chappelle brought back some of his most popular characters from “Chappelle’s Show” on the latest episode of “Saturday Night Live.” The sketch, called “Pop the Balloon,” was a parody of a viral YouTube speed dating series. In the original series, singles pop balloons to eliminate potential matches they are not interested in. On “SNL,” Chappelle appeared as his smooth-talking pimp character, Silky Johnson.
He was joined by Donnell Rawlings, who played fellow “player hater” Beautiful and Ashy Larry. The women in the sketch, played by “SNL” cast members like Heidi Gardner and Sarah Sherman, were presented with several bachelors. When Silky Johnson entered, he delivered his signature brand of insults and “constructive criticism.”
“Tangerine is your color, and there’s something in your belly button,” Silky joked to one of the women.
Ashy Larry also failed to impress, with his dry skin and baby powder-covered appearance. Rapper GloRilla, who was the musical guest for the episode, made a cameo in the sketch.
Silky Johnson returns to SNL
She quickly popped her balloon upon meeting Silky Johnson. This marked Chappelle’s fourth time hosting “SNL.” The episode drew a lot of attention for bringing back beloved characters from “Chappelle’s Show.”
Fans were thrilled to see Silky Johnson again. Chappelle had previously played the character on “SNL” in a “House of the Dragon” parody in November 2022.
The “Pop the Balloon” sketch highlighted Chappelle’s ability to blend nostalgia with sharp, current humor. It was a standout moment in an episode that also featured Chappelle doing stand-up comedy as an opening monologue. “Saturday Night Live” airs Saturdays at 11:30pm EST.
Episodes are available for streaming the next day on Peacock. Chappelle’s hosting stint generated buzz and praise for bringing back his iconic comedy personas.
