Tyler Perry’s latest film “Duplicity” has hit Prime Video, attempting to tackle the complex issue of police shootings. The movie follows Marley Wells, played by Kat Graham, a successful lawyer investigating the death of her best friend’s husband, an unarmed Black man killed by a white police officer. As Marley digs deeper into the case, she uncovers a web of secrets and lies that challenge her perceptions.
Tyler Lepley plays Tony, Marley’s boyfriend and a former cop turned private investigator, while RonReaco Lee takes on the role of Kevin, a police supervisor present at the shooting. Perry, who wrote and directed the film, said he was “tired of people taking movements and hashtags and hijacking them for financial gain, for political gain.” He hopes the movie will make people look “a little deeper at both sides of this to see where the truth is.”
While Perry acknowledges the popularity of true-crime dramas, he chose to create a fictional story to allow viewers to engage with the subject matter without the weight of real-life events. He believes that the answers to complex issues lie in finding middle ground and having conversations.
The film culminates in a powerful speech delivered by Graham’s character, addressing racial injustice and its politicization.

Perry said, “I think every answer we need is in the middle.
Either extreme is too bad. Every answer we need is right in the middle, no matter what it is. If we can meet in the middle, have the conversation, that’s where the change is going to happen.”
Despite the serious themes, Perry emphasizes that “Duplicity” is primarily meant to entertain.
He said, “If you get something from [the movie], great. If you don’t and you were entertained, then that’s great too.”
As one of Hollywood’s busiest figures, Perry finds inspiration in the young actors coming through his Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta. He looks forward to passing on his legacy to the next generation of talent.
“Duplicity” is now available for streaming on Prime Video.
