Brad Delson, the guitarist of the iconic rock band Linkin Park, recently shared his reasons for not performing live with the band’s new lineup. In an interview with Guitar World, Delson explained that he has decided to focus his energy on studio recordings and the creative process rather than touring. “For me, and I guess, all the guys, the last however many years gave us the opportunity to really think qualitatively about the band – what energizes us, where we feel most fulfilled, and where we thrive,” Delson said.

“I really thrive in the studio. I love making new things. That’s why I decided to focus my energy on that area.”

Linkin Park announced their return in September 2024 with the release of their first album since the tragic death of co-vocalist Chester Bennington in 2017.

The album, titled “From Zero,” features guest co-vocalist Emily Armstrong of Dead Sara and new drummer Colin Brittain, who replaces longtime drummer Rob Bourdon. While Delson played guitar on all the tracks of the “From Zero” album and was actively involved in the recording process, Alex Feder will be performing the guitar parts live during concerts. Mike Shinoda, co-vocalist and guitarist, provided more insight into Delson’s decision during an interview on The Zach Sang Show last November.

“He doesn’t love the touring and the live show lifestyle,” Shinoda explained.

Brad Delson’s studio focus

“So, he is our guitarist, but he’s not playing live.

He found a guy named Alex who’s spectacular, a really good guitarist and they get along great, and Brad chose Alex to play his parts live.”

Delson also discussed the process of training Feder to take on his role in live performances. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the feel of the band’s iconic songs and ensuring that Feder was well-prepared. “It’s just a great friendship.

He’s an amazing musician and a strong live player. I think he brings a lot to the show — and I’m really proud of it,” Delson noted. “Even though I’m not onstage, I put a lot of my creative love into it.

I’ve always been obsessed with the setlist, the concept of the show, and how it flows. I worked really hard on it; that’s no different than the past.”

As Linkin Park continues to evolve with its changing roster and newfound energy, the band members are focusing on what each of them excels at and where they feel most fulfilled. Fans are eagerly anticipating how the band’s new dynamics will play out in their upcoming endeavors.
