Dave Chappelle is set to make a triumphant return to “Saturday Night Live” this weekend. A new promo for the upcoming episode takes a jab at a past host who was notoriously terrible. The promo features a dramatic voiceover that sounds like Morgan Freeman.
“Studio 8H. New York City’s hallowed comedy ground,” the narrator says as the camera moves through the smoky hallways of the show’s home base. “A 50-year tradition of laughter.
All the greats have passed through these halls… And this Saturday… Dave’s back.”
The camera ends on a shot of Chappelle sitting on a stool, ready for his return.
But the promo also includes a subtle dig at action star Steven Seagal. Seagal hosted SNL in April 1991 and has long been criticized for his difficult behavior during his time on the show.
a jab at past hosts
Many cast members and creator Lorne Michaels have named him one of the worst hosts in SNL history. This will be Chappelle’s fourth time hosting in recent years. He previously hosted in November 2016, 2020, and 2022.
The comedian is known for his insightful and often provocative humor. He has a history of addressing the nation after major events like presidential elections. The musical guest this week is GloRilla, who recently got two Grammy nominations for her single “Yeah Glo!”.
Next week, Timothée Chalamet will return to host for the third time. In a unique twist, Chalamet will also be the musical guest. He will likely perform songs by Bob Dylan, who he plays in the upcoming movie “A Complete Unknown”.
After the January episodes, SNL will take a short break before coming back in mid-February with “SNL50: The Anniversary Special”. The special will air on Sunday, February 26th.
