Grace Confronts

Cameron Mathison recently opened up about the challenges he faces due to the backlash against his character, Drew, on “General Hospital.” In a candid interview, Mathison delved into how he copes with the negativity directed at his character. “The ways I do it involve going inward—not by numbing out or distracting myself, but through my meditation practice, my spiritual life, and trying to develop and utilize love and compassion for others,” Mathison explained. Mathison has faced numerous personal challenges himself, including a cancer diagnosis and the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rather than allowing these struggles to consume him, he chooses to use them to foster patience, acceptance, compassion, and connectedness with others. Despite facing a lot of criticism for Drew’s storyline, Mathison remains a fan of his character’s controversial relationship with Willow, portrayed by Katelyn MacMullen. He believes this relationship is beneficial for Drew and is hopeful about their future together.

Confronting online criticism with compassion

“I’ve never had people hate me so much,” Mathison remarked. “Almost everybody in line was livid at Drew.

I’m trying to make smiley pictures with a Christmas tree in the background, and they’re throwing things at me.”

Still, Mathison is optimistic about the future and feels that Drew is due for a redemption arc. He acknowledges that soap opera relationships often start in turmoil but can evolve into something meaningful. “In soaps, sometimes love stories start in complete dysfunction, mistakes, and betrayal, and everybody freaks out… but then the couple comes together.

It could be Drew and Willow against the world,” he enthused. Overall, Cameron Mathison handles the negativity surrounding his character with grace and resilience, focusing on personal growth and the brighter future he envisions for Drew and Willow.
